Application Options

If you are applying to more than one of the 500+ colleges and universities that use the Common Application, we recommend completing it. The application opens each year on Aug. 1 for enrollment beginning the following August.

If you have questions about the application, email the Office of Admissions.

Admissions essay

Include an original essay — written by you — that helps the admissions committee understand who you are and what you will bring to the Transylvania community. Limit your essay to 1‑2 typed, double‑spaced pages.

If you apply using the Common Application, you can upload your essay directly within the form.

Official secondary school transcript

Your transcript must be translated into English and include an explanation of your school’s grading scale.

Official test scores and English‑Proficiency Proof

International students from English-speaking countries, or students whose first language is English or who have studied in English-taught programs, should follow the test-optional guidelines for domestic students.

If English is not your first language or you are not from an English-speaking country, submit one of the following as proof of English proficiency:

  • SAT R (with critical-reading score 600–700)
  • ACT (minimum composite 30)
  • TOEFL (minimum 80)
  • IELTS (minimum 6)
  • PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online (minimum 52)
  • Cambridge O, AS or A Levels (passing)
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma in English (24 or higher)
  • Duolingo English Test (minimum 105)

Recommendation from a School Official or Teacher

Ask a counselor, principal or teacher who taught you in the past two years to complete a recommendation.

If you use the Common Application, your recommender can submit it through the Common App system.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

International students may be eligible for partial merit-based scholarships. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are considered for need-based financial aid. Transylvania does not offer fully funded or need-based aid for international students.

Year-Round Study

If you plan to remain in the United States during the summer and attend summer classes at Transylvania, be sure to budget additional funds for your expenses.

Once your application and documents are received, the admissions team will review your materials carefully.
