Research Opportunities

Apply your learning

Research projects allow Transylvania students to pursue knowledge outside of textbooks and the classroom. These experiences are increasingly important for those planning to attend graduate or professional schools.

Opportunities for research are made possible by the Kenan Fund for Faculty and Student Enrichment and the David and Betty Jones Fund for Faculty Development. Students can propose their own projects, or they can assist professors with research funded by grants that faculty members have won from other sources.

Recent faculty-directed student research projects include:

  • An archaeological project along the Atlantic Coast watersheds in Costa Rica
  • A study of the lives of Mexican immigrant women in the Lexington area
  • Observation and investigation of the Senegalese culture
  • An art project to restore and archive family photographs
  • Work to identify the source of genetic plasticity that allows for phenotypic diversity in dog breeds
  • Research at the Institute for Popular Democracy in Manila, Philippines
  • A study on the effect of white wine consumption on insulin sensitivity
  • Investigation of the connection between attitudes toward the feminine and the degree/quality of violence in ancient vs. modern societies
