Philosophy is a unique discipline. It pursues questions in every
dimension of human life and its techniques apply to problems in
any field of study or endeavor. Philosophy asks questions about
such basic
concepts
as reality, consciousness, personhood, and morality. It seeks
to provide rational methods of resolving conflicts and strategies
for evaluating ideas and arguments.
Transylvania offers a major and minor in philosophy. The philosophy program emphasizes skills in critical thinking and effective communication. It also develops self-understanding and deepens one's sense of the meaning and varieties of human experience. The curriculum combines discussion classes with independent study courses involving tutorial conferences. The latter offer you the opportunity to explore a philosophical problem, thinker, or movement in depth. Our faculty have special expertise in ethics, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, environmental philosophy, and twentieth-century European thought.
A background in philosophy will serve you well in any career by sharpening skills in problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking. Philosophy majors fill the needs of employers who are looking for people who think clearly, assess information, and write effectively.
