Transylvania's accounting program prepares you for a career in public accounting (CPA), governmental accounting, industrial accounting, internal accounting, or tax accounting. You will also learn skills that will prepare you for management positions. Course topics range from procedural aspects of accounting to income taxation as well as budgeting and auditing.
The program's main goal is to provide excellent preparation for entering the business world or a graduate program. Since students who graduate from Transylvania can qualify to take the CPA examination by completing only 1.5 additional courses, many sit for the exam immediately upon graduation. This allows our students greater flexibility in deciding whether to enter the business world or attend graduate school. Transylvania has an articulation with the University of Kentucky that allows a student to earn a master's degree in accountancy in 12 months rather than the normal 18 months. In addition, we have working arrangements with various prominent national graduate programs.
As an accounting major, you will have the opportunity to do an internship at a local business or CPA firm. You will be expected to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which provides free tax assistance to persons who cannot afford professional tax help. These two programs give you practical experience in the accounting field. You may also choose to join the Accounting Club, an organization that familiarizes its members with the accounting profession and makes use of valuable resources that provide opportunities for professional growth.
