General Education

Transylvania University believes that all students, no matter what career or vocation they choose, benefit from a liberal education. Therefore, we encourage the free search for knowledge and understanding drawn from the natural and social sciences, the humanities, and the arts. By exploring these areas, students are empowered to develop lifelong habits of learning and intelligent, respectful discussion.

Transylvania requires students to complete a prescribed number of general education courses in four areas:

  • Introduction to Critical Skills (Foundations of the Liberal Arts, Foreign Languages, Math, Lifetime Fitness, Academic Career Skills)
  • Approaches to Learning (Humanities, Fine Arts, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences)
  • Cultural Traditions (Western and non-Western)
  • Upper-level Liberal Arts (outside the student’s major)
