“Theater is an innately interdisciplinary art form, and theater artists find inspiration and direction in a number of unique ways.”
Michael O. Sanders knows all too well the importance of a liberal arts education. After all, he’s a Transylvania graduate himself, and he is technical director, scenic designer, and instructor in the university’s theater program. Throughout his own education and now as a faculty member, Sanders has firsthand knowledge of how such an education provides a solid foundation for students to “flourish.”
“This path enables students to explore the connections between seemingly disparate subjects,” he says.
Sanders also knows the importance of providing students with “usable skills both inside and outside of an academic setting.”
“Not only do they further their abilities to think critically, write well, and become knowledgeable about the fields of technical theater and theater design, they also learn the importance of collaboration, professionalism, pride in a job well done, safe use of tools and materials, punctuality, and taking ownership of creative and intellectual passions,” Sanders adds.
Through such classes as Technical Theater, Theater Design, Advanced Theater Design, and Puppetry Arts, Sanders has the opportunity to “spark an interest in students, foster that interest, and watch it grow through the course and/or their entire four years on campus.” That is the most enjoyable aspect of teaching, he says.
Design credits include Wit, Fully Committed, The Mystery of Irma Vep, Death and the Maiden, It's a Wonderful Life, and most recently The Bakkhai.
