Special Recommendations Concerning This Major:
  • A reading knowledge  of a foreign language (Chinese, French, German, Greek, or Latin) is recommended for all philosophy students, but it is strongly recommended for students planning to pursue graduate study in philosophy.
  • Philosophy students are encouraged, but not required, to take one of the philosophy travel courses, especially those to either Greece or Paris, sites whose contributions to philosophy has been substantial; these courses are not offered every year but commonly appear at least once in any four-year cycle; students are also encouraged to participate in study abroad programs through either Transylvania or KIIS to places of philosophical significance.
  • *PHIL 1024 Introduction to Philosophy is not required for the major, but some students take the course in the first or second year as one of their electives in the major.
  • **4 philosophy electives are required
  • ***A senior thesis is not required for the major, but it is strongly recommended for students planning to pursue graduate study in philosophy or related fields; students should plan on two semesters to write the senior thesis.

Ethics: Students especially interested in topics related to ethics should consult with Dr. Cox about course selection.

Gender and Sex: Students especially interested in topics of sex, gender, and women's studies  should consult with Dr. Cox about course selection.

Law: Students especially interested in topics concerning the law, politics, and society should consult with Dr. Fosl about course selection.

Environment: Students especially interested in topics concerning the law should consult with Dr. Fosl about course selection.

History of Philosophy: Students especially interested in topics concerning the history of ideas and the history of philosophy should consult with Dr. Fosl about course selection.

Cognitive Theory:

Students especially interested in topics concerning the mind and cognitive theory should consult with Dr. Furlong about course selection. 

Medical Ethics:

Students especially interested in topics concerned with medicine should consult with Dr. Furlong about course selection.
