Transylvania to host NCAA Regional Tournament

Update: The games have been pushed back due to inclement weather and will now be played at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Transylvania's men's basketball team will host a four-team NCAA Regional Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Beck Center. Three of the four teams in the pod are nationally ranked. The 16th-ranked Pioneers (23-4) will face Carroll University (16-9), winners of the Midwest Conference Tournament, Friday at 9:30 p.m. No. 9 Birmingham Southern (25-2) takes on No. 17 Wittenberg (21-6) in the first game at 7:30 p.m. The regional final is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. Transylvania won the Heartland Conference's regular season crown by four games but was upset in the tournament finals in overtime by Rose-Hulman.

The Pioneers received an at-large bid into the 62-team NCAA Championship and are making their fourth appearance since 2006. Birmingham Southern won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title but was also an at-large selection after falling to Trinity in its conference tournament finals. Carroll, which is located in Waukesha, Wisc., is also nicknamed the Pioneers. They are making their first tournament appearance since 2007. Winners of the North Coast Athletics Conference regular season championship, Wittenberg lost to Denison in the conference semifinals, but became the third at-large team in the Lexington regional. The Tigers won the NCAA Division III title in 1977 and were national runners-up in 2006, the same year Transy advanced to the Elite Eight.

Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday. Tickets for adults will be $6, and $3 for senior citizens and students. All seating will be general admission. For more information, go to www.transysports.com.
