President Carey Biography
Dr. Seamus Carey President, Transylvania University
Seamus Carey has brought a sense of renewal to Transylvania University since becoming the 26th president in 2014. Under his leadership, the campus is being transformed by major building projects—from the construction of three new residence halls to the renovation of the iconic Haupt Humanities Building. He also initiated the 100 Doors to Success Mentoring Program, which helps students transition from college to the workplace, and Project One, a coordinated effort to deepen the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Before coming to Transylvania, Dr. Carey was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. Previously he had been chairman of the philosophy department at Manhattan College, where he served on the faculty senate, as chair of the School of Arts curriculum committee and as director of the university’s Center for Professional Ethics.
Dr. Carey’s numerous articles and books focus on the intersection of philosophy, parenting and family life. His areas of philosophical interest include 20th century continental philosophy, environmental philosophy and ethics. He remains an avid sportsman, having played basketball at Vassar College as well as Irish football and hurling, and enthusiastically supports the Transylvania athletic teams from the stands.
