“Students who come to Transylvania get the best of both worlds. Not only do they get the in-depth knowledge—we have concentrations in finance, marketing, management, and entrepreneurship—but they get the broad liberal arts base with courses in music, literature, and the sciences. They become well-rounded.”
As Bill Baldwin explains, “Every company needs someone with a business background.” It’s a field of study any graduate could put to good use, whether by choosing a somewhat obvious career, such as marketing, advertising, finance, or management, or finding a niche at a non-profit or government organization.
Business administration skills are also critical for self-employed medical and legal professionals and, well, most anyone trying to manage personal finances or build a career in any industry.
Baldwin thinks the flexibility of Transylvania’s business administration major is one reason it’s so popular. Students can combine it with a major in exercise science, for example, if they’re interested in sports management, or pursue studies in the fine arts if they’re interested in managing a museum or performance venue. Students can also design their own majors to fit their particular career goals.
Baldwin particularly enjoys the small classes and the interaction with students that Transylvania affords. Professors not only work with students in the classroom, but they see them at the campus café, in committee meetings, while pursuing joint scholarly research, and during impromptu visits to a professor’s office.
“I think some students feel like they’re burdening the professor, but we really enjoy students coming to see us. It shows their interest, and we’re happy to discuss their questions.”
Baldwin knows Transylvania both as a member of the faculty and as a parent. His daughter completed a major in business administration, concentrating in hospitality. She currently works for Action Marketing in Boulder.
“As a parent, I was really pleased with her education here.”
